How to ship figures & anime goods home from Japan (tax-free, customs, options)
Bought more than fits in your suitcase? Here's how to ship figures and anime goods home safely — the tax-free angle, shipping options, customs in your country, and packing tips.
Tax-free goods and shipping
Tax-free purchases are duty-free on the condition that you take them out of Japan. Shipping them home yourself is fine — but general goods (figures, electronics) can be used before you leave, while consumables (food, cosmetics) are usually sealed and must leave unopened. Keep receipts; see our tax-free guide. Always confirm the current rules at the store's tax-free counter, as Japan's system is changing in 2026.
Shipping options
- Japan Post — EMS: the most popular for collectors. Fast (a few days to a week), tracked and insured, with a weight-based price. Good for fragile, valuable figures.
- Japan Post — Airmail / ePacket / Surface: cheaper and slower; surface mail can take 1–2 months but is very cheap for heavy boxes.
- In-store / online shop shipping: big retailers like Mandarake, AmiAmi and Surugaya ship internationally directly from their online stores — convenient if you'd rather not carry it.
- Proxy / forwarding services (e.g. Buyee, Tenso): consolidate online purchases and forward them abroad, useful for shops that don't ship overseas.
Customs in your country
When your parcel arrives home, your country may charge import duty and/or VAT/sales tax above a value threshold. Declare the contents and value honestly on the customs form; under-declaring can cause seizure or fines. Check your country's de minimis (duty-free) threshold before you ship.
Packing tips
Figures are fragile. Keep the original boxes (collectors value them), wrap with bubble wrap, and pad the outer box so nothing shifts. For tall figures, reinforce corners. Insure anything valuable via EMS. If carrying in luggage instead, pad boxes and pack them centrally, away from edges.
FAQ
- Can I ship tax-free items home myself?
- Yes. Tax-free goods just have to leave Japan; shipping them home counts. Keep your receipts, and note that consumables (food/cosmetics) are sealed and should leave unopened. Confirm current rules at the store's tax-free counter.
- What's the best way to ship figures?
- For valuable or fragile figures, Japan Post EMS is the collectors' favourite — fast, tracked and insurable. Surface mail is far cheaper for heavy boxes but slow. Major shops like Mandarake and AmiAmi also ship internationally from their online stores.
- Will I pay customs duty at home?
- Possibly. Many countries charge import duty and/or tax above a value threshold (de minimis). Declare contents and value honestly on the customs form and check your country's threshold before shipping.
