What it is

animate Ikebukuro is the flagship of Japan's largest anime/manga retail chain and the symbolic heart of Otome Road — the Ikebukuro district that caters heavily to female fans (fujoshi). After a major renovation completed in March 2023, the building expanded across many floors of manga, light novels, anime DVDs/Blu-rays, character goods, doujinshi, cosplay and event space, making it one of the biggest anime stores in the world.

Foreign fans go for the sheer breadth of official merchandise, frequent collaboration cafés and pop-up fairs, and limited goods tied to currently airing series; it anchors the wider Otome Road cluster of female-oriented shops nearby.
