The scene
Hakone is the real-world location that creator Hideaki Anno based Tokyo-3 on in Neon Genesis Evangelion. Lake Ashi (Ashinoko) stands in for the large body of water in establishing shots and the area where Shinji and Rei fight the Angel Ramiel, while Owakudani — the steaming volcanic valley — is where Shinji wanders after running away from home. Togendai station on the lake inspired the in-series transit, and the switchback climb of the Hakone Tozan Railway evokes the mountainous terrain where the Evas deploy.
Hakone is an easy trip from Tokyo: the Odakyu Romancecar limited express runs from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto in about 85–90 minutes, and from there the Hakone Tozan Railway, ropeway and sightseeing boats connect Gora, Owakudani, Togendai and Lake Ashi. Note that some 'Eva' sights are real geography rather than buildings, and official Evangelion collaborations (station signage, merchandise) appear in Hakone periodically rather than permanently.
