Maid café etiquette: a first-timer's guide (photos, charges & rules)
Everything a foreign visitor needs before their first maid café: the charge system, the all-important photo rules, what 'moe moe kyun' means, and how to not make a faux pas.
What a maid café is
A maid café is a themed café where staff in maid costumes treat you as the 'master' (goshujin-sama) or 'princess' (ojou-sama) of a mansion. It's playful role-play hospitality — cute food, little chants, and photo or game options — not a bar or anything adult. Akihabara is its birthplace.
The charge system (don't be surprised)
Most cafés charge a table/seat fee or entrance fee on top of what you order, and many limit seating to about one hour. Some bill a per-hour table charge (e.g. ¥880/hour at Maidreamin); others an entrance fee plus a one-drink/one-order minimum (e.g. @home cafe). Extensions cost more. Always check the menu's charge section first.
Photo rules — the #1 thing to know
You generally cannot freely photograph the maids. You may usually photograph your own food, drinks and the menu, but candid photos or video of the maids and other guests are prohibited. If you want a photo with a maid, buy the paid instant-photo service (a 'cheki' Polaroid), which has its own posing rules. When in doubt, ask before you shoot.
Other etiquette
- No touching the maids and no asking for personal contact info.
- Join in the fun: maids may ask you to chant 'moe moe kyun' over your food to make it 'tastier' — it's part of the experience.
- Omurice often comes with a drawing in ketchup; some cafés do a little song or game.
- Tipping isn't expected; pay the listed charges.
Which one for a first time?
@home cafe and Maidreamin are both used to foreign guests and offer English support — good first choices.
